On Joy
Have you noticed the extreme negativity that’s everywhere you turn right now? Social Media is filled with angry statements and videos. Regardless of what your opinion is, the videos and statements are designed to make you angry. It’s even hard to tell which videos are real or made by AI. People, or AI, are creating images designed to make us angry. What do you do with that anger? I personally don’t want to walk around rolling angry thoughts around in my head all day or before bed at night.
So, take a walk. Walking outside can help clear your head, giving you pause to think without being influenced. Getting the blood moving helps you to stay calm. It would be even better with a friend or a special pet along.
We cannot control what’s in the media or what’s happening in the world. We can join protests, send postcards, or stand on a bridge, but our central nervous systems need a break.
I’m suggesting ways to move forward without continually being angry. We need to find joy.
Joy is a word we hardly say anymore, but it’s making a comeback. It means to have an inner feeling of happiness, contentment, or bliss. It’s tough to find these days, but you can find it again. Look for the small moments. The time spent tickling a child and laughing together, or the time spent baking a favorite snack for all to enjoy. Hiking in the woods, petting a pet, talking to them, or playing your favorite music. Buy flowers and enjoy the scent, or do something special with a close partner. Donate to a charity or a cause. Watch a humorous show instead of choosing one with violence. Smile, as you find your joy. We must focus on the small positives that we have right now, so we can stay sane in the chaos.
Today I lit a candle for loved ones who have passed. I remembered special times together that made me laugh, like the memories I had from when I was young with my family. Playing on a beach with my siblings and laughing without a care in the world, those simple moments bring joy. Do what you can to recreate the love you felt from long ago. Enjoy those. Your nervous system will thank you for taking care of yourself, even for a moment.
